Tonight is a celestial event known as a Super Wolf Blood Moon. There won't be another one for 18 years. It's comprised of three parts: "Super" refers to the moon's proximity to the Earth along its orbit, getting up to 14% closer at its perigee; "Wolf" referring to the first full moon of January, traditionally associated with the howl of wolves in the distance; and "Blood" because the moon will appear red due to how the sun's light bends and refracts off of the Earth's atmosphere. To celebrate, BloodMoon and Wettworker are coming together to release their collaborative single "Mahihkan" - Cree for "wolf". A tribalistic, experimental drone that paints an ethereal, minimalist dreamscape, BloodMoon's hauntingly delicate vocals play with the space in Wettworker's fragmented relic of an instrumental. BloodMoon herself writes: "This song was conceptualized two years ago. It tells a story. For me, it is a place. The Snow and the Night are long. It tells the story of my search for my own identity as a Mètis woman; incorporating Cree, French, and heart language. It is also a reminder to respect the identities and stories of others. I am daily trying to be aware of my many areas of privilege. It is important that each of us do the same, particularly now, during a time of ongoing social /systemic oppression and racism towards indigenous peoples." We hope that you enjoy our song. We hope that you are fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the ultra-rare Super Wolf Blood Moon tonight. And we hope that we all take a moment to remember that the advancement of the human race lies within compassion and empathy, respect for the dignity and struggles of others, and not in regressive, divisive fabrications like borders and walls. Thank you.
