Under Dutch rule (17th century to 1945), it developed as Batavia (modern-day Jakarta), serving as the administrative and commercial center of that time. When I heard about it, I thought, "Oh, the buildings must just have a nice look to them." But when I actually visited, there were lots of fun places to explore, and it turned out to be an absolutely enjoyable spot.
