Abstract: Fossil fuels are cheap, easy to transport, and easy to store. Global success to replace fossil fuels implies that electricity (the new form of clean energy) must be economically competitive, also easy to transport as well as to store. Batteries play a central role in this transition. Mobile devices were enabled with efficient and economic lithium-ion batteries. Transportation is following suit as electric vehicles of all sizes deploy globally. Smart grids are increasingly utilizing stationary battery storage systems to store electricity. Each of these segments poses a different use case, and consequently, impacts the design, performance, reliability and economics of the battery. Software comes to the rescue. In electric vehicles, battery management software is crucial to the vehicle's performance, safety and battery supply chain. In smart grids, battery and energy management systems, both on the ground and in the cloud, are responsible for the efficient deployment and use of expensive assets.
