New York City in 2016, right before Trump was elected for his first term... These are the shots that I took on my free time, while getting to know the city and its people. I came to visit my friend but ended up staying for almost half a year and working illegally, which I couldn't do on my tourist visa. For the record, many places in NYC had many employees who were working there illegally. As someone whose country is a part of the EU, I was really surprised by how easy it was to get a job illegally, just by knocking on the door. I also realized how few rights I suddenly had as a worker who wasn't protected by any labor laws... It seems to me that illegal work in the US is a part of the system that was built that way. It's not an exception - it's an expectation. Employers hire illegals to do all the "background" work with little to no security, labor laws, healthcare, or recognition. These workers have very limited rights and basically no voice. And yet, the city would not survive without them. As an immigrant who's working there illegally, you're in survival mode. Every single day. You keep the system running, but you're not a part of it. You make money, but your status is still "nobody". You're included, but excluded. So this video is for the people who keep NYC alive but who live in a constant state of "tolerable slavery". Every minute, every footstep, and penny is counted; your inner clock runs by the second; you feel like a part of a vast machine that never stops. It's not the stock market, not the landmarks, not the skyscrapers and most definitely not Donald Trump that makes NYC great. It's the illusion of diversity, inclusion, community and opportunities that the city supposedly has that attract all of these people who make NYC into what it is. In reality, it is great, and it isn't. Everything stands on the back of hardworking "aliens", people who came here from all over the world, most of whom are giving their all to the city just to exist in it illegally. Forever stuck in a systemic limbo. I see you. I miss you. This song is for you. #nyc #newyork #beforeTrump
