The author, Bill O' Hanlon actually decided to kill himself in 1971 but has since gone on to write 17 books and live a successful life. Solution oriented therapy is all about having a flashlight and just knowing where to shine the light - the author makes a case that in some cases it's not really necessary and can sometimes be counter productive to dig into the core of the problem in order to try and understand why someone is neurotic. In these cases, it may just simply be better to apply solution oriented therapy, and this book outlines a bunch of techniques that you can use in such situations. Some of the points covered in this book:- Doing something different when you're not happy - pay attention to the negative patterns in your life and try to eliminate them Paradox intention How you can overcome feelings Visualisations, self talk Rewriting life stories Blame Impossibility Invalidation Nonaccountability stories Solving relationships issues Sex and communication Using rituals to get over the past bring connectivity to the family As an example of solution oriented therapy, Bill talks about Viktor Frankl and how he used paradoxical solution oriented therapy to cure people who were having anxiety attacks in his clinic. He asked the patients to try and deliberately trigger a panick attack themselves and the patients found that they couldn't and were ultimately relieved of their anxiety. Another example is a patient with depression that realised that when she was truly happy, she was single (not in a controlling relationship) ad used to talk a lot more with her friends and socialise. The lady started to deliberately incorporate these actions into her life again and found that it helped pull herself out of the depression that she was in. Both of these examples were given in the book. A summary of the solution oriented life:- 1. Break problem patterns 2. Find and use solution patterns 3. Acknowledge your feelings and the past without letting them determine your actions in the present and the future 4. Shift your attention 5. Imagine a future that leads back to solutions in the present 6. Change problem stories into solution stories 7. Use spirituality to transcend or resolve problems 8. Use action talk to solve relationship problems 9. Perform a resolutional ritual to resolve unfinished issues from the past 10. Develop stability and connective rituals to prevent problems and create connections You can get a copy of the book here:- http://amzn.to/1UlBLtp Resources:- My book list:- https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
