LA RÉUNION — Investigators are trying to determine whether the debris found in the western Indian Ocean belongs to the missing aircraft MH370 that vanished in March 2014. To determine whether the debris is from MH370, investigators will begin by comparing the serial numbers that are riveted into parts of the plane. Investigators have already found two letters and three numbers, “BB670”, on the debris, though it doesn’t match the serial number of the missing aircraft, according to Wired. Investigators will also compare the size, thickness and rivet pattern of the debris to the parts of the missing Boeing 777. Initial findings suggest the debris is likely to be a flaperon of a Boeing 777, CNN reported. If the debris is confirmed to be part of a Boeing 777, investigators would also have to explain how the debris ended up almost 4,000 miles from the last known position of the missing aircraft by checking its paint and metal for corrosion, in order to determine how much time it has been soaked in water, according to Wired. The Malaysian government has sent a team of investigators to Reunion Island to confirm whether the debris belongs to MH370. “We need to verify. We have wreckage found that needs to be further verified before we can further confirm if it belongs to MH370.
