Former troops of President Rabbani who lost Kabul to the Taliban last Friday have taken refuge in the Panshir Valley 75 kilometres north of the city. Hundreds of people fled from the Panshir before Rabbani's forces dynamited the narrow entrance to the valley blocking the Taliban's advance. 2nd October - Salang Highway Various shots of troops walking along the highway 1st October - Panshir Valley Various shots of explosion as government troops block valley entrance Shot of people running away Various shots of tanks lined up (Taliban) Shot of men climbing onto tank Close up of man Various shots of people being searched Various shots of tapes being destroyed 35637 Afghanistan - Taliban Forces Launches Offensive on Government Troops APTV Salang and Panjshir, Afghanistan - 8 October 1996 Intense fighting broke out in Afghanistan as Taliban forces launched an offensive on retreating former government troops on the Salang Pass, north of the capital, Kabul. The latest fighting brings the Taliban closer to the area under the control of Uzbek warlord Rashid Dostum. Earlier, it was reported that Dostum had threatened to attack Taliban positions if there was no end to the fighting in the Panjshir. Afghanistan's Taliban Muslim militants opened a new offensive Tuesday away from their onslaught against government troops in the Panjshir valley. Locals were fleeing the Salang Pass as Taliban rockets fired salve after salve into enemy positions. Taliban also opened sudden peace talks with powerful northern warlord General Abdul Rashid Dostum at a meeting apparently brokered by Pakistan, another influential neighbour. In northern Afghanistan, General Rashid Dostum met representatives of the Taliban in Mazar-e-Sharif, several hundred kilometres north of Kabul. Dostum, who has formed an alliance with the deposed government of President Burhanuddin Rabbani, has been trying to open negotiations with the Taliban Islamic army. Soldiers loyal to Ahmed Shah Massood have been staging a series of successful guerrilla-style attacks on Taliban troops scattered along the road that leads north out of the capital.
