Here is a rough reconstruction of Ellen Greene's death scene as it appears in Howard Ashman's copy of the August 22, 1986 workprint of Little Shop of Horrors. Noted at the Library of Congress as the "complete workprint with original ending," the August 22 workprint is likely the workprint shown to the film's second preview audience, if not also the first. A list of "addition shooting" material, listing shots of "Audrey peaking in from alleyway to see what's happening" during Mean Green Mother from Outer Space, as well as other material for the film's theatrical ending, is dated August 18, meaning this copy of the workprint was made after the decision was made to reshoot the ending. This was possibly so several members of the creatives would have a copy of the film with the "true" ending. A rough reconstruction, a true recreation of the sequence is not possible due to lack of film materials, as the workprint also features different underscoring and a few minor cuts and alterations. As such, this video is instead a rough edit, edited from memory and meant to illustrate the two major cuts of the sequence. Notably, this edit cuts Seymour rushing a dying Audrey into the back ally and cuts the exchange "Audrey, are you alright?" "Yes... No." Also, though a memorable moment in both the stage musical and The Director's Cut of the film, Ellen Greene's reprise of "Somewhere That's Green" was cut from this edit of the film, implying that Frank Oz had decided to cut it. (However, the reprise was not cut out of Howard's August 8 workprint of the film, meaning this cut had happened recently.) However, the entire sequence would later be scrapped, along with the entirety of the film's original apocalyptic ending, and all official releases of the original ending would use an earlier edit with the reprise intact.
