The Moine Thrust, which runs parallel to the West coast of Northern Scotland is the site of an ancient ocean closure, around 450 million years ago. The Moine sediments were stacked up on top of each other by a series of thrusts and then the stack, including the thrust faults, was strongly folded. Along the road to the Isles from Glenfinnan to Morar you cross a series of these thrust and folded metamorphosed sediments (structures called nappes) from the overriding plate, with some very impressive structural features. Further west, in Southern Skye, you can see the rocks and structures of the subducted plate. In this video we look at the Ardnish syncline, a ~5km wide segment of the Sgurr Beag Nappe, showing some very nice parasitic folds which display the larger structure in microcosm.
