Pete Hegseth vowed to remove “woke” policies and overweight members from the US military as he urged anyone against his plans to resign. “If the words I’m speaking today are making your heart sink, then you should do the honourable thing and resign,” Hegseth, the defence secretary, told a gathering of hundreds of generals and admirals at Quantico Marine Corps Base in Virginia on Tuesday. “We would thank you for your service. Following on from President Trump’s rebranding of the defence department to the Department of War, Hegseth declared the former name “dead” and said the new name showed that the military was “preparing for war and preparing to win”. Trump unveiled the new name via executive order, but it can only be officially changed by Congress. Hegseth, using his unofficial new title of “secretary of war”, pledged to eliminate “woke garbage” and ordered the military to return to the “highest male standard”. “No more climate-change worship, no more division, distraction or gender delusions,” he said. Hegseth also renewed a call for improved fitness in the ranks. Railing against “fat generals”, he ordered that there be daily exercising and twice-a-year physical fitness tests.
