Alum Mike Hopkins is chairman of Sony Pictures Television. It's his latest stop on a career that has seen him rise from door-to-door sales after graduating from Long Beach State to directing television programming for one of the world’s biggest studios. Hopkins started at Sony last December after a successful run at Hulu and still was learning the ins and outs at Sony, including the number of television shows his new company produces, such as “The Good Doctor,” “The Outlander” and “S.W.A.T.” “I have a stack of power points I have to go through as well,” he said. “But ultimately I think it [the job] will be creating content and selling shows to everyone. We have 26 production entities globally.” Read more at: http://web.csulb.edu/sites/beachmag/2... Transcript: My name is Mike Hopkins, Chairman of Sony Pictures Television. I really gained my passion for business and marketing at Long Beach State. And taking business classes that I took and marketing courses really created this sort of fire and passion for this is what I wanted to do with my career. I was with Hulu for a little over four years. We decided that we really needed to supercharge the company and the distribution of it through original programming. Most notably The Handmaid’s Tale which premiered last year and won a lot of Emmy’s and some Golden Globes in the last few months and that really helped propel the business. My mantra has been just work really hard. You know work really hard and just learn and understand the company and the industry you’re working in. But it all comes back to hard work and effort. Sony has a huge opportunity here in the US television business to really be the biggest independent studio in the country. When you look at the other studios around town most of them are alined with other media companies and with other networks and we’re not. And I think that gives us a huge advantage to sell to everyone. I think it’s going to be a really big effort for us going forward to take even more advantage of that.
