Fascia is essential for structure, stability, balance, strength, coordination, capability, proprioception and gait yet is often totally overlooked in our pain management plans. Tuulia Luomala joins Hannah Capon to explore the wonderful and fascinating world of fascia, what it is, what it does and why it needs to be a big consideration when managing arthritis. Tuulia’s presentation provides us with diagrams, photographs and video to show what it looks like and the complexity of it throughout the body. Working on fascial health should be part of managing arthritis and can be as simple as keeping your dog moving, keeping them warm and either having someone massage/manually treat/perform physiotherapy on your dog, or learning some interventions yourself. Tuulia Luomala is a physiotherapist with extensive training and experience with fascia and fascia-related therapies. She graduated in 2000 as a physiotherapist and in 2002 as an animal physiotherapist. She has been learning Pilates, Feldenkrais and other movement therapies. Acupuncture and kinesiotaping are modalities that she is using in her practice with fascial techniques. She has been learning many fascial treatment methods such as fascial release with Thomas Myers, structural integration with Robert Schleip, fascial manipulation with Stecco Family and osteopathic techniques with various teachers. She is also a manipulative physiotherapist (Maitland concept), graduating in 2010. She is currently writing a book about the animal fascial system with Vibeke Elbrønd, Mika Pihlman and Rikke Schultz.
