SOUNDBITE (English): Ehud Barak, Former Israeli Prime Minister: "We have to hear it from the Crown Prince. It will be a major positive signal in spite of the fact that we cannot agree to the details for reasons which are obvious. 242 and 338 (U-N Security Council Resolutions) did not talk about going back to the borders of '67 but of going back into secure and recognised borders for Israel, and I already made it clear long ago that I believe we should adopt a strategy on three pillars. Pillar number one: striking against terror with whatever it takes to hit it. Number two: leave the door open for resumption of negotiation at any time, without any precondition beyond the full absence of violence based on the principals of Camp David. And number three: since Mr Arafat did not want an agreement, and I experienced it personally as the Prime Minister, it should not paralyse Israel from doing the right things, and we should launch a gradual plan to disengage ourselves from the Palestinians, to establish fence between us, following the famous line by Robert Frost 'good fences make good neighbors,' and to secure Israel actively and at least to reduce dramatically the possibility of suicide attacks into our streets." 6. Barak surrounded by press STORYLINE: Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak said in New York on Tuesday that he felt positive about a proposed speech detailing proposals for peace in the Middle East by Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah. In The New York Times on Sunday, columnist Thomas Friedman quoted Abdullah as saying that he was preparing to talk at an Arab summit meeting next month and offer Israel peace with the entire Arab world in exchange for an Israeli pullout from all the territory occupied in the 1967 war including the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem. Abdullah later said he would not deliver the speech because of the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon against the Palestinians. Barak said what is needed now is disengagement from the Palestinians. Barak was speaking at a conference in New York where Israeli experts are introducing about 40 of the country's security and technology companies to a few hundred potential customers in the United States.
