Partner Session hosted by the German Newspaper Publishers and Digital Publishers Association (BDZV). Let’s talk about news literacy and the probably biggest study done yet by many different, and usually competing stakeholders in the German news industry. When looking at the young generation, legacy media in Germany face a disturbing prospect: kids, teenagers, young adults don’t read us, don’t listen to us, don’t watch us as they used to. And they won’t ever again. Instead of bemoaning this fact and/or starting the umpteenth educational effort to instill appreciation for the news in their current formats, we decided on a turnaround. We asked kids and youngsters what media they use, when and where – and, first and foremost, how and where they get their news, meaning everthing newsworthy to young people in a broader sense. Taking it from there we now ask ourselves: How should future news formats look? What could change in the allover approach to our audience? What should change? The resulting initiative #UseTheNews is a joint effort by Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa), Leibniz Insitute for Media Rsearch (HBI), Bundesverband Digitalpublisher und Zeitungsverleger (BDZV), Südwestrundfunk (SWR) as well as many publishing houses and TV/radio stations all over Germany.
