After an aggressive week of shot stopping, it was important to keep this session sharp but to not over burden the physical side, especially as this was two days before a game and the day before a travel day. Thus, we reduced the repetitions for the keepers today in every set, which in 90+ degree weather was the smart thing to do! All things that the keeper will likely see in the game are covered here, from handling and distribution, to high balls and shot stopping. The Activities! 1. WARM-UP: LIGHT MOVEMENT AND HANDLING: Simple shuffles and a step in for a volley starts the session off. Try to focus on starting with an activity that gets the body moving, but also calls for technically clean execution to set the standard for the rest of the session. 2. DOUBLE COLLAPSE AND PLAYING WITH THE FEET (1 TOUCH/2 TOUCH): The keepers perform a light collapse dive off the knees and recover in preparation to pass with the feet. The movements here should be sharp, and the activity works on quick passing combinations and head checks to see where the receiver is. 3. 1 TOUCH, 2 TOUCH, HANDLING: We start to increase the ground covered by the keepers and combine passing and handling. The need for a keeper to play a quick pass and drop for support is a big part of today’s game, so we bring that aspect to this drill. The handling aspect if working on refocusing on the task of catching the ball cleanly after dynamic movement. 4. HIGH BALLS 1: The activation here gets the keepers working on quick hand-eye coordination at close range, before utilizing good footwork to get set and focused on a ball that is further out. The “cross” is simply a ball that is thrown here to prepare the body for the next activities. 5. HIGH BALLS 2: A one touch pass to activate leads to adjusting the starting position for a cross. A double movement helps the keepers to maintain good footwork, body shape, and positioning. Here we introduce very light pressure as a distraction to the keepers, and the service as is a throw again to focus on the catching technique. 6. HIGH BALLS 3: The mannequins are removed, and the serves are now hit from the ground. More intense pressure is put on the goalkeeper to simulate what they will see in the game. 7. HIGH BALLS AND SHOT STOPPING: Keepers take an unopposed cross and distribute the ball to the opposite side from the cross. After recovering AT THEIR OWN PACE to the ball line (the imaginary line that goes from the middle of the goal to the ball), the keepers face a shot in and around their body. The shots are with reflex balls that bounce and roll unevenly, so there is an added need to get set early on watch the ball all the way in to the hands. 8. HIGH BALL AND QUICK SAVE: An unopposed cross is followed, in this case, by a quick set position and a sharp save. The game situation covered here is if a ball is not caught cleanly on the cross and a follow up effort on goal occurs. Again, the week was hard on the keepers physically, so a lighter pre-game session with fewer reps greatly enhanced the need for everything to be clean. Any day before a game session should be designed to build the confidence of the keepers in preparation for game day. Thanks for watching and see you next time!
