Smt. Preethi Anand provides a glimpse into the life and works of the prolific composer, Oothukadu Venkata Subbaiyar also known as Oothukadu Venkata Kavi. The composer lived in the 1700s. He composed several works in Sanskrit, Tamil and Marathi and his compositions are said to have filled the gap between Purandara Dasa and the carnatic music trinity. A devout bhakta of Krishna of the Kalinga narthanam temple, his works themselves provide information about his life. Needamangalam Krishnamurthy Bhagavatar, who hails from his lineage, is said to have propagated his works to a great extent. He was greatly influenced by the works of earlier composers like Jayadeva, Azhwars, Nayanmars, Tukaram, Kalidasa and Arunagirinadhar. The poet is known to have composed various krti-s on presiding deities of several kshetram-s like Pazhani, Srirangam, Sikkil and so on. He is famous for his several group krti-s like Saptaratna krti-s, Anjaneya Saptaratna krti-s, Kamakshi navavarnam krti-s and Guru Krti-s. He has created several opera-s with the most famous among them being Krishna Ganam which contains several famous songs like Thaaye Yashoda, Pullai piravi thara vendum, Paarvai ondre podhume and so on. Others include Ramayanam, Mahabharatam, Prahlada Charitam, Dhruva Charitam and so on. Smt. Preethi talks of his musical genius, tala prowess and the beauty of his compositions. Many of his compositions abound with a mixture of several gati bhedams, yati patterns, swaras, cholkattu-s, and thus are a treasure trove for dancers. She very beautifully presents a composition of this great composer, where the gopikas complain about Balarama - Ippadiyum Or pillai in ragamalika. ABOUT PRAYATHNAM Prayathnam is a forum of young committed dancers and dance teachers dedicated to the idea of 'sharing' the knowledge of both the theory and practice of dance as a medium.
