Life on the Edge of Nuclear War - A Day in 1990s Kashmir (1991)

On 6 June 1991, ITN filmed soldiers of the Indian Army as they patrolled the streets of Srinagar, in Indian-administered union territory of Jammu and Kashmir in the disputed Kashmir region. While the territory had been disputed between India and Pakistan since 1947, the 18 months before this footage was filmed consituted an era of mass unrest and renewed violence. The Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front, backed by Pakistan, led a violent insurgency against Indian administration of the region, which was brutally countered by the Indian army as well as India's Border Security Force (BSF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Disputed by the three nuclear powers of India, Pakistan, and China, the region of Jammu and Kashmir has long been seen as a potential flashpoint of a nuclear war.
