Attaignant, was a composer, archivist and editor of secular and sacred music in the early Sixteenth Century. He is remembered by musicologists and early music enthusiasts around the world as the imprimateur par exellence of French High Renaissance music. Around 1528, the French King François I granted him a license to print music on a grand scale. And to this end, Attaingnant employed his new system of movable type that improved on technologies that the Venetian printer Ottaviano Petrucci had used a generation earlier. Between 1525 and 1550, Attaingnant became the most prolific publisher for the greatest composers in Paris as well as across France and the Netherlands. Description of the photos: 1.
