Within a fortnight of the Supreme Court ordering the removal of stray dogs from the streets of the Delhi NCR region, animal activists have gathered to raise their voice in favour of the voiceless. Animal rights activist Manavi Rai among others, was detained from the India Gate protest site. According to the top court’s directive, the Delhi government and civic bodies in Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad are to immediately begin relocating stray dogs from all localities into shelters. Dog lovers have pointed to the lack of necessary infrastructure like permanent shelters to relocate close to 10 lakh dogs within eight weeks. Others have welcomed the Supreme Court judgement, citing reasons like proper care, food and medicines at the shelters.
