Not only did the farm fail to report the outbreak, it also failed to properly dispose of the carcasses. Taichung city officials have now discovered the case and have implemented entry controls around the farm. They’re also culling all the farm’s chickens, disinfecting the site, and tracing eggs that may have entered the market. Let’s hear from officials. Lu Shiow-yen Taichung mayor It’s confirmed that the chicken farm had an avian flu outbreak, and so all the chickens on the farm must be culled. We will disinfect the site, control entry of all staff and vehicles, and trace, recall and destroy all eggs that have entered the market. Lee I-an Agriculture Bureau of Taichung The farm did not notify us of an outbreak, and so we’ll issue a penalty between NT$50,000 and NT$1 million in accordance with the Act on the Prevention and Control of Infectious Animal Diseases. As for the dead chickens, they shouldn’t have been sent to a rendering plant, and so we’ll issue a fine in accordance with the Animal Industry Act. The egg farm was the first in Taichung to receive animal welfare certification, becoming a chicken-friendly egg farm in March last year. However, it chose to conceal the outbreak, threating public health and safety. City authorities are tracing all the eggs that may have entered the market during the outbreak. They’re also reminding the public to thoroughly cook chicken meat and eggs to avoid getting sick.
