The band is lead by composer and guitarist Julian Woods and plays his original compositions and arrangements, which explore blues language, dense minimalism-inspired textures, colourful chromatic harmony, open improvisation, contemporary through-composition, and dirty, rock-like tones. Introspection released their self-titled debut EP in April 2017, available on bandcamp at introspectionmusic.bandcamp.com/. The EP consists of two pieces: The first a modal-sounding Woods original titled ‘Ultimatum’, and the second a jazz-rock and free jazz take on McCoy Tyner’s legendary standard ‘Passion Dance’. --- Long Bio: Introspection is the primary project of composer and guitarist Julian Woods. The band's music partly spawns from Julian's wide array of musical influences, fuelled by his habit for extensive listening. These include: -The free jazz works of Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, John Zorn, Marc Ribot, and others. -The blues-rock sounds of Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Peter Green, and modern rock music such as PJ Harvey, Rage Against The Machine, and Nine Inch Nails. -The contemporary jazz and fusion music of Troyka, Cuong Vu, Nicole Mitchell, Steve Lehman, The Delegation, Chris Potter's Underground, Adam Rogers DICE, Django Bates, Pat Metheny, Miles Davis, and others. -The contemporary classical ideas of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Arnold Schoenberg, as well as the works of historic composers Claude Debussy and Richard Wagner. -The bebop and straight-ahead works of Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Bud Powell, and others. -The R&B and hip hop sounds of Erykah Badu, A Tribe Called Quest, Lords Of The Underground, Gorillaz, D'Angelo, Michael Jackson, and Robert Glasper. Amongst other things, the band's music explores the use of blues language, dense minimalism-inspired textures, colourful chromatic harmony, open improvisation, contemporary through-composition, and dirty, rock-like tones. He recently debuted the new play 'Dark Suit and Lavender Shirt, Standing' at the Chelsea Theatre, his first show as musical director and composer, as a member of the Clearwater Collective. The music was performed with Jim Gold and Seth Tackaberry. Other engagements have included playing for a production of Cole Porter's 'Anything Goes' at the Oxford Playhouse, a performance of Philip Glass's second string quartet arranged for four electric guitars at Modern Art Oxford, and performances at dozens of college balls and other events in numerous small jazz ensembles, playing guitar, bass guitar, electric upright bass and, on occasion, keyboard. He has received tuition from Rob Luft, Nigel Price and Will Davies, as well as studying under Marc Ribot, Joel Harrison, Miles Okazaki and Steve Cardenas during the 2017 Alternative Guitar Summit camp in New York.
