U.K. Lockdown Cut Virus Cases by 30%, Health Secretary Says

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock praised the British public Monday saying the month-long lockdown had been "successful" in bringing down COVID infection rates by one third in England. "We've got this virus back under control," said Hancock during a national address to update the public on the handling on the pandemic. He said the number of daily new cases was now below 15,000. This compared to more than 25,000 just a fortnight ago, he added. The lockdown was imposed after public health officials warned that an exponential rise in new coronavirus infections was threatening to overwhelm the National Health Service as the winter flu season approached. The measures closed non-essential businesses like many shops, gyms, bars and restaurants. The lockdown is due to be replaced with a three-tiered system of restrictions, with areas facing different measures depending on the severity of their outbreaks.
