"Like a wave upon the sand..." Playin' in the Band's ending section - the Reprise - has an interesting story to it. Although technically part of the actual song itself based on the original composition and structure from Bob on his Ace album, Playin' Reprise started to develop its own entity and even requirement for the band's archivists to list it as its own thing. There are a few reasons for this: Starting in 1977, and noting official releases like Road Trips Vol. 1 No. 2 (covering October '77), archivists began explicitly labeling it as a "Reprise." This was because the band started "sandwiching" other massive songs (like Terrapin or Estimated) inside Playin'. The team realized that listing it as just Playin' in the Band twice in a setlist was confusing, so the "Reprise" became its own statistical entity to show that the "sandwich" had been closed. By the time the late 80s and 90s came around, the band took the notion even further—they would "open" the jam in one city and not "close" it with the Reprise until a later show in the tour. At that point, the Reprise had to be its own entry because it wasn't even in the same show - and the Archivists couldn't properly call it by its full song name... because it was just...well, the Reprise... Origins: The song's main time signature and beat patterns were thought to have derived from "The Main Ten," a 10-beat-to-the-measure jam the band played as early as 1968. The First "Official" Reprise: While it occurred naturally in sandwiches in the early 70s, it gained its own identity in the late 70s (notably October 1977) as the band began separating the "open" and "close" of the song across multiple tracks. Total Live Performances: Playin' in the Band is one of the most-played songs in the Dead's history (587 times), but the standalone "Reprise" entry is much rarer and is noted about 34 times.
