The Paideia Institute is excited to present a free online lecture with Madeline Miller–Classicist, teacher, and author of best-selling novels The Song of Achilles (2011) and Circe (2018). Miller’s novels retell and expand classic stories from Greek myth, foregrounding the narratives of characters–Achilles’ lover, Patroclus, and Odysseus’ temptress, the nymph Circe–who rarely take center stage in their Homeric source material. These sweeping works of mythological realism bring to life a world that is rich with the fantastical imagery of the Greek epic tradition, and anchored in the timeless themes of power, homesickness, and the tension between fate and choice. _ Madeline Miller graduated from Brown University with her BA and MA in Classics, and taught Latin, Greek, and Shakespeare to high school students for over a decade. She wrote The Song of Achilles, which won the 2012 Orange Prize for Fiction, and Circe, which won the Indies Choice Best Adult Fiction of the Year Award. Both were number 1 New York Times Best Sellers, and have been translated into over 25 languages worldwide. _ This lecture is sponsored by St. John’s College, where every student studies Ancient Greek and reads Homer, Aristotle, Plato, Sappho, Sophocles, Euclid, and Ptolemy—to name just a few.
