Jadugoda: A Silent Graveyard of 200 Innocent Children

The word “Jadugoda” means the land of magic, but the reality of this town in the East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand is heartbreaking. Uranium mining began here in the 1960s, and since then the region has suffered from displacement, contaminated water, and the constant fear of radiation. Despite powering the nation’s nuclear energy, the people living here—mainly from the Adivasi communities of the Santhal and Munda tribes—continue to struggle silently. This documentary highlights the shocking condition of more than 200 children in Jadugoda who are disabled, mentally challenged, or born with severe deformities. Families have reported cases where four to five children from the same household died, infants were born prematurely or stillborn, and many children who survived were born with disabilities—swollen heads, missing limbs, water in the brain, or other neurological disorders. According to a BBC Hindi documentary, UCIL states that for every 1 kg of uranium extracted, 1,750 kg of radioactive waste is produced. UCIL claims that the tailing ponds contain radioactive elements but insists that villagers are affected by malnutrition, not radiation. However, research from Kyoto University found radiation levels above 1 millisievert per year in Jadugoda’s villages, and over 10 millisieverts near the tailing ponds. (For context: the WHO states that 50–100 millisieverts significantly increases the risk of cancer.) Radiation exposure can damage the central nervous system, weaken white blood cells, and reduce the body’s ability to fight infections. It can also lead to early miscarriages, premature births, and stillborn babies—symptoms widely seen in this region. Through this documentary, I aim to show the harsh reality and human struggle behind this “unbelievable” place.
