We found the biggest swarm I've ever seen in the orchard and brought it home! Steps to rescue a swarm: 1. Prepare equipment (hive or nuc box with frames, lid, bottom board, veil, capture container, pruners maybe, spray bottle optional). 2. Set the hive box directly under or beside the swarm cluster. 3. (if swarm is agitated) Lightly mist the swarm with sugar water to calm them and keep them together. 4. Position the open hive so the frames are ready to receive the bees. 5. Shake or cut the branch so the swarm drops into the hive box. I use a large stock pot because the size of this swarm was so large. Some people use a tote. 6. Replace the frames and close the hive gently. 7. Watch the entrance for fanning bees to confirm the queen is inside. 8. Leave the hive in place for several hours so remaining bees can enter. 9. Return around/after dark when all bees have settled. 10. Strap the hive together securely. 11. Block the entrance with grass for transport. 12. Move the hive to its permanent location. 13. Open the entrance and place grass or a branch in front of it to force reorientation. 14. Feed 1:1 sugar syrup the next day if forage is limited. 15. Inspect the hive after 5–7 days to confirm comb building and eggs. #beekeeping #swarmcatch #beeswarm #honeybees #beekeepinglife #savethebees #backyardbeekeeping #beekeeping101 #swarmrescue #wildbees #beeswarm #honey
