How Does The ABA Process Work? 4. Additional Information Alright… before we dive into ABA’s, I’m hoping you can help... Alright… let’s dive in and help shed some light on to yet another special education acronym... “ABA” ABA Or “Applied Behavior Analysis” Is defined as A type of therapy used to decrease inappropriate behaviors and increase appropriate behaviors. It is mostly used for children with Autism but can work for anyone with behavior issues. ABA Increases Language And Communication Skills and it can Improve Attention, Memory, Academics, And Focus Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is primarily used as a short term therapy and aides in understanding; 1. How the behavior works 2. How the behavior can be affected by the environment 3. And How learning takes place -So Who’s actively involved in monitoring the results? 1. parents 2. teachers 3. IEP team members Now that we have a grasp on what Applied behavior analysis is and why it’s used let’s discuss briefly what an ABA entails. A behavior analyst (BCBA) will write a detailed assessment based on the child or adults; 1. interests 2. Preferences 3. behaviors 4. Environment Once the assessment is complete, The therapist will then write treatment goals using this information. The behavior analyst (BCBA) frequently meets with; -Parents -Teachers -Support Team Important note; an ABA is written specifically for an individual and is NOT a one size fits all. I know that the process we just covered may seem simple, but it can be VERY effective! Alright… The final portion of today’s episode is to discuss some additional information regarding an Applied Behavior Analysis. Applied Behavior Therapy can be used within the school setting or just out in the local community. When establishing a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), ABA Therapy can be included as a treatment. For more information on a BIP… please see our video on that topic. • Behavioral Intervention Plans In Special E... One of the most critical aspects of an ABA is understanding the behavior. This is done using the ABC method… A. Antecedent- it’s What Occurs Right Before The Behavior Can Be Verbal, Physical, From The Environment Or Internal B. Behavior - which is the Response C. Consequence - Action that Comes After the Behavior That is Applied Behavior Analysis in a nutshell.
