What does it mean to be an artist, as a woman, in India, from the 1970s to the present? In this interview, Sheela Gowda talks about her artistic life – from her childhood, through her training with various teachers, to her studies in London and Paris. What led her to turn away from figurative painting and begin developing works from everyday materials such as cow dung, kumkum powder, but also hair, needles or threads? Gowda provides insight into how her search for her own artistic language developed and what role the changing political situation played and still plays today.
