Don’t people find the information you’re providing valuable? Aren’t you teaching them the things they want to know? For an email to be truly valuable, it can’t just be informative. It can’t just be educational. It needs to be relatable, too. Write your emails with a tone that comes across as relatable to your audience. How you do that depends on who you’re writing for, but some basic guidelines apply: • Show them you understand the culture you share with them (e.g. Hip-hop music, artisan baking, Apple technology). • Draw analogies between the concepts you’re teaching and the touchstones your audience already understands (Drake’s latest album, sourdough starters, the iPhone 12). • Entertain! Even if you’re talking serious business, your tone doesn’t have to be dry and businesslike. You’re not just in the business of educating with your content.
