The Tough Guy Race is billed as the toughest race in the world, with the 8-mile cross-county run followed by a daunting assault course, it has been running at South Perton Farm near Wolverhampton for 30 years, but organiser Billy Wilson has decided that this year was to be the last. Such is the strength of the cult surrounding the event that it attracted people from around the globe, including Mexico, Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, and Israel. Many competitors were dressed for running success whilst others donned fancy dress costumes. More than 5,500 thousand people from some 42 countries turned out on a cold and wet day to test themselves to the limits, many retiring before the finish due to injury, fatigue, or hyperthermia. After the exhausting run, they are required to haul themselves over huge wooden barricades and scary rope heights, crawl through thick mud, hurdle over walls of fire, and plunge into freezing water in what is an outrageously extreme assault course. To make things more stimulating, the marshals taunt the competitors to speed up and set straw bales alight as they struggle through the gruelling course. There are few rules to the challenge apart from everyone taking part must sign a death warrant, saying “It’s my own silly fault for being here”. The race is a unique sporting adventure event and this race marks the end of an era. It is a test of both mental and physical endurance. The phenomenon of Tough Guy has developed over many years and has now evolved into a cult status across the globe where competitors need all their wits and endurance to beat the course. However, the overwhelming appeal of the event is not only the challenge but the great spirit of camaraderie and the sense of conquering the extreme racing conditions. The event, first held in 1987, was started by former Grenadier Guardsman Billy Wilson. It is claimed to be the world's most demanding one-day survival ordeal. The assault course (affectionately known as ‘the Killing fields’) was designed by the former eccentric Grenadier Guardsman and is capable of inflicting grievous bodily harm. This year conditions were challenging, temperatures were characteristically cold and wet and the course was particularly muddy and slippery. The emergency services were busy dealing with the usual cases of hypothermia, exhaustion, broken bones, and bruised egos. For a few, the real glory comes in finishing within the top dozen runners but for most, the achievement of beating the course is the real challenge. There is no prize money for the winner or runners-up, just bragging rights only a few manage to earn. In the end, it was John Albon who took top honours, firmly establishing himself as a ‘Tough Guy’ finishing in a time of 1:40.45; he also won the event in 2015. James Appleton came in a few minutes later at 1:43.40 with Hagen Brosius finishing in third place.
