Please SUBSCRIBE for more videos. Nikon D810 The 36-megapixel Nikon D810 has some pretty big shoes to fill, replacing the much-loved D800 and D800E with a single model. Taking the best of both, this detail-devouring beauty has even greater per-pixel resolution, a wider sensitivity range, greater performance, more capable video capture, and more -- but it also now has competition from rivals Canon and Sony. How does it fare in this new reality? Read our in-depth Nikon D810 review, and find out! Pros: Handles even better than its predecessors; Absolutely spectacular images from the 36-megapixel image sensor; Unusually wide sensitivity range for its resolution; Improved performance and buffer depths; Improved video feature set; Impressive low-light autofocus Cons: Prone to moire and false color with some subjects; No longer available with a low-pass filter; Demands excellent lenses for the best detail; White balance tends warm under tungsten lighting In early 2012, Nikon started a trend with the launch of the D800E, a full-frame digital SLR which did without a resolution-robbing optical low-pass filter in the quest for maximum resolution. That's a change which has since swept the industry, with OLPF-free cameras available at all levels -- professional, enthusiast, and even the entry-level. Now, Nikon follows up with the D810, a camera which shares much with its predecessor -- but there are some very important differences. Perhaps the most important of the bunch is one of strategy. The Nikon D800E's move away from a low-pass filter was a bold one at the time, and the company hedged its bets with the Nikon D800, a simultaneously-launched model that was near-identical, save for the inclusion of a low-pass filter. This time around, there is no such equivalent for the Nikon D810. With a refinement of the same 36.3-megapixel image sensor from the D800 and D800E, along with a next-generation EXPEED 4 image processor -- not to mention a market populated by photographers who now have a better handle on the moiré and false-color implications of foregoing that OLPF -- Nikon is clearly confident in the D810's ability to stand alone. Nikon D800 Promising extremely high-resolution images, the Nikon D800 doesn't disappoint; better yet, its high-ISO performance surprised us, able to produce a good 8 x 10-inch print even at ISO 25,600. Well-designed and built, the Nikon D800 is a premium performer that easily earns its selling price. Pros: Rugged build; Excellent controls; Extremely high resolution; Dual cards; Surprising high ISO performance. Cons: Very large files; Slower frame rate; Custom white balance gives a greenish tint; Battery life lower than D700. Three and a half years after introducing the D700, Nikon revealed the long-awaited D800. While it's still full frame, the new SLR is endowed with three times the pixels of its predecessor with its 36.3-megapixel sensor. That's more than any other 35mm-size SLR currently on the market, as of this writing, and sets the D800 apart from the company's recently announced professional SLR, the Nikon D4. The D3 shared the same resolution as the D700, but the two lines have taken new directions starting in 2012. Overall, I was impressed with the Nikon D800. Its amazing 36.3-megapixel sensor gave me the ability to crop and enlarge files without pixilation. Its comfortable fit and weight felt familiar in my hand, and I liked the wide ISO range and effective noise reduction. I also love the ~100% viewfinder. The first time I photographed with the D800 I also brought along my D700 to compare. I noticed right away that the Nikon D800's viewfinder was ~100% coverage instead of the ~95% coverage in the D700. I was thrilled! What you see is what you get. Something else I realized quickly was the D800's LCD monitor had a greenish tint when I shot in Kelvin. My photography is very warm and I normally photograph in the shade around 5560K. I remembered as I shot that it was a little odd and decided to photograph a photo with the same setting, one with each camera so that when I came back to the office to load the photos into Lightroom, I could see if there was a difference in the file itself.
