A viewer comment on my recent video about measles at the Ark Encounter asked a fascinating question: How could measles have survived on Noah's Ark with only eight people? This sent me down a rabbit hole exploring the origin of the measles virus, viral evolution, and what young earth creationists actually believe about viruses. In this video, I examine the Morbillivirus genus, the family that includes measles, canine distemper, and the now-extinct rinderpest. These viruses share remarkably similar six-gene genomes, yet infect completely different host species. The scientific evidence points to measles originating from cattle (rinderpest) through zoonotic transfer only 1,000-2,500 years ago—well after any proposed flood date. I explore three possible YEC explanations for virus survival through the Ark bottleneck: latent viruses, zoonotic origins post-flood, and environmental reservoirs. While young earth creationists can sidestep the measles problem by accepting its recent zoonotic origin, this creates a different problem—they must accept rapid viral evolution with genuine new genetic information, not just "reshuffling" of existing genes. The irony? The same family of viruses demonstrates exactly the kind of evolutionary change YEC proponents claim cannot happen.
