The Pannonian Avars were a powerful nomadic people who dominated Central and Eastern Europe during the early Middle Ages, from the late 6th to the early 9th century. Originating from the Eurasian steppe, they swept into the Carpathian Basin and established a formidable khaganate, ruling over Slavic and other subject peoples while waging wars against the Byzantine Empire, the Lombards, and the Franks. Renowned for their cavalry and steppe warfare, the Avars built a society that combined nomadic traditions with influences from their conquered neighbors, becoming a major force in European politics for over two centuries. Their power, however, gradually weakened under pressure from internal revolts and Frankish campaigns led by Charlemagne, culminating in their collapse by the early 9th century. In this episode, we uncover the rise and fall of the Pannonian Avars—a nomadic empire whose presence shaped the medieval history of the Carpathian Basin. #history #ancienthistory #historydocumentary #historyforsleep
