Here, the Russians launched a new offensive into Ukrainian territory, attempting to cut off the remaining Ukrainian forces in Kursk. However, as the number of fallen soldiers piled up along the border, it quickly became clear that the Russians' hopes of an independent advance were all too illusory. Initially, the Russian forces attempted to overrun the Ukrainian troops retreating from Kursk by directly attacking the contingent. However, the Ukrainians had established solid holding lines at Gogolevka and Rubanschina to secure their retreat, forcing the Russians into a three-day battle for the small settlement of Rubanschina, which severely delayed the Russian advance. When it became clear that attempting to directly overrun the Ukrainians would lead to further failure, the Russians opted for a completely different approach. The Russians attempted to encircle and eliminate the remaining Ukrainian contingent in Kursk and Sumy, even though most of the forces had already successfully withdrawn. To still achieve victory, the Russians decided to launch an offensive in the Sumy region itself. The main focus of the Russian effort was to capture Novenke and Basivka and gain direct fire control of the Sumy-Sudzha highway, which remained the most important Ukrainian supply line for their efforts in the northeast. Securing the road would complicate the Ukrainian defenders and eventually create the conditions for encircling at least some of the retreating Ukrainian troops. However, the Russians were at a massive disadvantage: the catastrophic losses at Kursk had severely hampered their ability to launch a follow-up offensive into Ukrainian territory. According to various estimates, the Russian armed forces suffered up to 55,000 casualties during the seven and a half months of intense fighting and multiple failed counteroffensives in Kursk. These losses far exceed the 50,000 troops the Russians originally deployed to Kursk to repel the Ukrainian attack, as the Russians had to transfer increasing numbers of reserves from other sectors of the front, including wounded soldiers, and rely on North Korean assistance to finally push the Ukrainians back. Ukrainian sources also report that the Russians lost up to 2,100 vehicles in Kursk, including more than 750 armored personnel carriers, infantry fighting vehicles, and tanks, resulting in a significant shortage of armored reserves for the Russian armed forces in Kursk. While the exact number of Russian troops still available and combat-ready in this sector is unknown, it is clear that they are unable to launch their follow-on offensive to encircle even a portion of the Ukrainian Kursk forces. Geolocated footage shows that here, too, Russian soldiers were forced to cross open fields to attack Ukrainian positions on foot, in modified vehicles, and even on electric scooters. Despite the lack of suitable vehicles, the Russians launched a continuous wave of attacks, hoping to overwhelm the Ukrainians and achieve their objectives through sheer tenacity. Unfortunately for the Russians, the Ukrainians were able to use their artillery against the unarmored vehicles, inflicting devastating losses on the Russian attacks. Furthermore, by this time, Ukrainian drone operators had already had ample opportunity to fully relocate to Sumy and launch waves of drones at the Russian attacking waves. The weakening of Russian military capabilities in one of its most critical sectors, Kursk, demonstrates the desperate situation the Russian military finds itself in. Furthermore, the Ukrainian invasion of Belgorod made the situation worse for the Russians, as their already depleted reserves had to be urgently diverted to halt the second Ukrainian advance into Russian territory. With the active front line now expanded by more than a third, the Russian armed forces were soon unable to deploy continuous waves of soldiers in their flanking operations, and their efforts eventually ground to a halt. ...
