In this episode of In Good Company, Dave McRobbie sits down with Rob Cartwright, founder and MD of Skentel, to talk about what the Internet of Things actually means in practice for holiday parks, and why the conversation goes much further than most people expect. Rob has been building and monitoring electrical systems for 25 years. Sixteen years ago, he realised he was driving 50,000 miles a year to check on equipment that, with the right technology, he could monitor from anywhere. That shift shaped everything Skentel became. In this conversation, Dave and Rob explore what remote monitoring looks like on a real park today: from electric meters being read every 30 minutes without anyone moving the shop fridge, to hot tub heating switching on automatically when a booking check-in signal arrives, to shower faults being detected and work orders raised before a single guest notices the water going cold. They also get into the bigger picture: how Skentel and Holidaymaker are working together to bring live sensor data into the guest-facing layer, what people counting and footfall data means for on-park experience, and why Rob is on a deliberate 10-year journey to become a fully circular economy business and what that actually involves in practice. It's a proper conversation. Recorded at Dave's house (there was a mix-up about the office), with a dog in the background and a lot of genuine enthusiasm for technology that solves real, unglamorous problems.
