. ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS KEY TERM/POINTS: • ETHCIAL IMPLICATIONS: Psychologically/ research and theory may impinge on people’s human rights, and may influence public policy (government policies) • There may be a conflict between the methods Psychologists have to use and the dignity of the P’s. • It is also possible for research findings to be misrepresented in the wider media. Etc.. Researchers have little control of this • SOCIALLY SENSITIVE RESEARCH. These are areas of controversy, because they deal with issues that have far reaching consequences for those who take part. E.g. Research into sexuality, race, IQ, or genetic basis for criminality. These areas also attract a good deal of attention form the public and the media SOCIALLY SENSITIVE RESEARCH AND ETHICS (Seiber and Stanley 1988) • Implications?: Some studies could seem to give acceptance to predjuce and discrimination (ie studies on race and IQ) • Uses?: could this research be used for political policy and ends? • How valid is it? We need to see a reflective aspect to the research. Sometimes it has been out and out fraudulent! • For example: Burt 1955, who believed that intelligence in genetic gave false data to the government (even make up two research assistants!) and the Grammar School system was setin place to decide who would get an academic education form age 11 and who wold not. EVALUATIONS • There is an argument that to research into controversial areas is very important and thatunderrepresented groups could be beneficial,as they have a voice. However for this to continue it is important that researchers do not ‘shy away’ from these areas. • In EWT SSR has benefited society and the legal system – for instance looking at the unreliabilityof eye witness accounts. • Kizinger and Coyle argue that research into alternative relationships (different sexualities/gay relationships) has been guilty of framing questions in such as way as to imply that heterosexual relationships were suggested to be superior. Therefore this illustrates that how we FRAME QUESTIONS is any important issue for researchers in Socially Sensitive areas.
