I VISITED 6 HISTORICAL SITES IN ROME DURING PANDEMIC 1) ST. PETER'S SQUARE AND BASILICA - PIAZZA SAN PIETRO E BASILICA Is a large plaza located directly in front of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City, and Rome's greatest tourist attraction. Each year 6 million tourists visit it. The papal enclave inside Rome, directly west of the neighborhood of Borgo. Both the square and the basilica are named after Saint Peter, an apostle of Jesus considered by Catholics to be the first Pope. At the centre of the square is an ancient Egyptian obelisk, erected at the current site in 1586. Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed the square almost 100 years later, including the massive Doric colonnades, four columns deep, which embrace visitors in "the maternal arms of Mother Church". A granite fountain constructed by Bernini in 1675 matches another fountain designed by Carlo Maderno in 1613 2) COLOSSEUM - COLOSSEO Known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, the Roman Colosseum is one of the capital's most remarkable monuments. Every year over 6 million people visit it. The Colosseum is the main symbol of Rome. It is an imposing construction that, with almost 2,000 years of history, will bring you back in time to discover the way of life in the Roman Empire. On 7 July 2007 the Colosseum became one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. 3) CASTLE OF THE HOLY ANGEL - CASTL SANT'ANGELO The Mausoleum of Hadrian, usually known as Castel Sant'Angelo is a towering cylindrical building in Parco Adriano, Rome, Italy. It was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. The building was later used by the popes as a fortress and castle, and is now a museum. The structure was once the tallest building in Rome. 4) SPANISH STEPS - SCALINATA DI TRINITA DEI MONTI A magnificent example of Italian Baroque style, Piazza di Spagna and its “Scalinata Spagna” is one of the most-visited squares in Rome. The 138 steps, also known as the “Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti”, was originally built to link the Spanish embassy to the Holy See at the base, to the church of Trinità dei Monti at the top. Designed in Baroque style by Italian architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi, Europe’s widest staircase was constructed between 1723 and 1725 thanks to the funding of French diplomat, Etienne Gueffier. The fresh water fountain at the bottom of the steps, Fontana della Barcaccia (which translates to the “fountain of the ugly boat” because of its half-sunken ship shape) was commissioned by Pope Urban III and built by father and son Bernini. 5) VICTOR EMMANUEL II NATIONAL MONUMENT - ***ALTARE DELLA PATRIA Is a national monument built in honour of Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy, located in Rome, Italy. It occupies a site between the Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline Hill. It is currently managed by the Polo Museale del Lazio and is owned by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities. 6) TREVI FOUNTAIN - FONTANA DI TREVI Is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world. The myth of the Trevi Fountain Why are there always people in the fountain throwing coins into the water and taking photos of themselves? The myth, originating in 1954 with the movie "Three Coins in the Fountain," goes like this: If you throw one coin: you will return to Rome. If you throw two coins: you will fall in love with an attractive Italian. If you throw three coins: you will marry the person that you met. In order to achieve the desired effect, you should throw the coin with your right hand over your left shoulder. #rome #sanpietro #stpetersbasilica #spanishsteps #piazzadispagna #colosseo #colosseum #trevifountain #fontanaditrevi #romantic #piazzavenezia #venice #venicecitywalktvtours #venezia #veneziaitalia
