"Hocus Pocus" by Focus, Reaction/Analysis by Musician/Producer Original Video: • Hocus Pocus - Focus | The Midnight Special Note from GWFrog: "Focus was (and is) a Dutch prog rock band. One day in the studio in 1971, while recording their second album, guitarist Jan Akkerman laid down a solo meant to be satircal of every rock band that liked to show off its chops. Bassist Bert Ruiter immediately picked up on it, and drummer Pierre van der Linden followed with a short solo before singer/organist/flutist Thijs van Leer got into the act. The band did six verses, then they listened to the nearly seven minutes long result and named the piece "Hocus Pocus" to go with their name. Surprisingly, "Hocus Pocus" by Focus became in international hit. While touring in support of their hit, Focus appeared on The Midnight Special on NBC. Acts appearing before them went longer than scheduled, so that by the time it was Focus' turn to play "Hocus Pocus" there was only a less-than-six minute slot left. Undeterred, Akkerman took off, the band played the entire song in five and a half minutes, and the crowd went wild. Thereafter, Focus played "Hocus Pocus" at the same breakneck speed. In "Hocus Pocus" van Leer yodels, cuts loose with controled screams, sings nonsense lyrics over his organ playing, plays flute, and whistles. Before recording "Hocus Pocus" he had never yodeled, but he did a more than creditable job."
