JACKIE MITTOO Jackie Mittoo & Friends - THE HEAVIEST CUTS - A DJ Mix by Mista Savona Some of my all time favourite Jackie Mittoo instrumentals & productions, including many rarities & lesser known 7"s & B-Sides. Jackie Mittoo - the legendary Jamaican organist and keyboardist! A child prodigy who between the ages of 15 and 21 helped shape and transform the music of Jamaica - as it transitioned from Ska and Rocksteady into Reggae music as we know today. In 1963 (at the age of only 15!) he became musical director at Coxsone Dodd's famed Studio One, and soon after co-founded the seminal group The Skatalites. He produced hit after hit record, and as the 60's progressed he developed a deeply funky sound that became hugely influential worldwide. His work at Studio One required him to deliver at least five new riddims / instrumental backing tracks a week, but sometimes he was recording more than this in a single day! This huge output resulted in thousands of original compositions over a short time, and his instrumental tracks continue to be used in today’s DJ music and Dancehall genres. A good example of this is Sean Paul's & Sasha's 'I'm Still in Love With You', originally written by Jackie Mitoo & Alton Ellis in 1967. The focus of my DJ set here is on Studio One & his work with the incredible house band Sound Dimension, whose members all played a key role in the foundation of reggae music and deserve a shoutout too: Drums: Fil Callender, Joe Isaacs, Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace Bass: Boris Gardiner, Leroy Sibbles, Brian "Bassie" Atkinson Guitars: Ernest Ranglin, Eric Frater Keyboards: Jackie Mittoo, Robbie Lyn, Richard Ace Percussion: Fil Callender, Enid Campbell, Denzel Laing, Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace Saxophones: Headley Bennett, Cedric Brooks, Karl Bryan Trombone: Vin Gordon This DJ set also explores Jackie's later (and more dubby) work with producers such as Bunny Lee & Prince Jammy, as well as his Motown-inspired funk output (which kicks in around the 2 hours mark). The set finishes with some meditative nyabinghi instrumentals. The man was truly incredible, and as a keyboardist and organist myself his output has been massively inspirational, both in my playing styles and in my productions. I hope this tribute set helps more people to discover his music. Enjoy! Donat Roy Mittoo aka Jackie Mitoo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_...
