First and foremost the trumpeter has a distinctive turn of phrase marked by a mysterious, often haunting quality, with some notes pinched and scraped into life as a result of Akinmusire’s advanced tonal control. Largely played at mid-tempo the songs have an often understated but emotionally charged resonance that reflects self-discipline as well as virtuosity. The leader’s writing builds an astute bridge between jazz, classical music and Americana, while his impressive band includes the excellent guitarist Charles Altura, whose finely shaded harmonizing and yearning countermelodies are ear-catching, to say the least. An intriguing spin on a small group tradition that includes anybody from Wayne Shorter to Bill Frisell and Ron Miles.
