In this video, I explore Hen, His Wife (1990), one of the boldest and most experimental Soviet animations. Its complex use of Freudian symbolism not only earned it a nomination for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival but also dramatically shaped the career of its director, Igor Kovalyev. This film helped pave the way for Kovalyev’s move to Hollywood, where he became a key animator and director behind some of the most iconic animated series of the ’90s, including Rugrats, Aaah!!! Real Monsters, and The Simpsons. ✌️If you’d like to support Art Warp financially, you can drop a donation here: https://www.ko-fi.com/artwarp 🎁 Or, if you’d rather help me improve my videos directly, you can send me something from my Amazon Wishlist—I always need AA batteries ;) https://www.amazon.de/wishlist/1V021F... __________ 0:00 Introduction 0:58 Why Hen, His Wife Is Not Your Typical Soviet Cartoon 2:08 The Uniqueness of the Animation Studio Behind the Film 3:00 Hen, His Wife’s Journey to the Cannes Film Festival 3:21 What Is Freudian Symbolism? 3:55 Plot Summary 4:49 Explaining the Freudian Symbolism in Hen, His Wife 8:21 From Soviet Animation to Klasky Csupo, Nickelodeon, and Adult Swim 10:20 Conclusion and Final Thoughts JJJreact
