MHI&I were joined by Dr Ed Beveridge and Dr Claire Jones from the Royal College of Psychiatrists to discuss and explore the persistent and widening mortality gap faced by people living with severe mental illness, who die up to 20 years earlier from largely preventable physical illnesses and what the Royal College of Psychiatrist is doing to reduce this. The College has produced a position statement and recommendations (due out soon) which outlines key inequalities, highlights under-recognised physical health conditions, and emphasises the need for earlier prevention, timely access to care, and integrated services. Using a life-course approach, the talk stresses involvement of lived experience, quality improvement, and parity of esteem and emphasises the fact that the College does not accept the current status quo.
