Promoting Paradise By Removing a Parking Lot

At Marine Discovery Center in New Smyrna Beach, over 22,000 square feet of asphalt has been replaced with a vibrant landscape of more than 1,000 native plants. This transformation also includes a kayak launch, a Living Shoreline, shoreline stabilization demonstration areas, and a scenic perimeter trail, all designed to enhance the experience of the 40,000 guests who visit our campus each year. A Living Shoreline is a method of stabilizing the coast using materials like native plants, rocks, and other structural materials. Unlike seawalls or other hardened structures, living shorelines protect against erosion while mirroring a natural shoreline, providing wildlife habitat, and supporting the area's natural coastal processes. This project was completed with the support of Disney’s Water Stewardship Grant, St. Johns River Water Management District, Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, Volusia County, the City of New Smyrna Beach, and Marine Discovery Center staff and volunteers who dedicated hundreds of collective hours to dig holes, install & water new plants, and lay pine straw.
