Order of Service (see below) Sermon: Lifting Up the Forgotten Soul In today's Music Sunday performance, Margaret Bonds and Langston Hughes lift up Balthazar, the "brown king" who visited the infant Christ. They created honor and dignity for their African American community by naming a Black character in the story of salvation. We remember our beloved dead on this All Souls Day, creating space for love even where there is pain. The Rev. Sarah C. Stewart preaching. Today's Music: We are proud to be presenting Margaret Bonds' cantata The Ballad of the Brown King today in our service. Our adult choir will be singing, James Haupt will be on the piano, and we are welcoming soloists Christon Carney and Sarah Callinan, as well as our own Amanda Dings Vollum. Bonds wrote this work in 1960 about the journey of the three kings to visit the infant Jesus. She dedicated the work to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and in her own words she "compared the march on Montgomery with the ride on the desert.” Come hear this joyous, jazzy, contemplative, and tender work!
