THE GERMAN RETREAT AND BATTLE OF ARRAS | LAURA ROSSI | Le Giornate del Cinema Muto 2025

Having previously scored Battle of the Somme and Ancre, it was an honour to complete the trilogy of these important historical films. I scored the Somme for full symphony orchestra, Ancre for chamber orchestra, and Arras for choir and chamber ensemble. As this film has more footage of local people, battalions, and the battle’s aftermath compared to the other two, I decided it would work well as a choral piece using poetry and text, mainly written by the soldiers who were there. I also arranged a few songs as part of the score, and listened to IWM recordings of soldiers talking about their experiences. I found an incredibly moving tape of a soldier who was at Arras, talking about the songs they sang; he breaks into song, singing “When this wicked war is over”. I decided to use this for the end credits, and wrote an orchestral accompaniment fo it - it’s an incredibly powerful and poignant ending to the film. (...) CATALOGO GCM2025
