Wide of trial court STORYLINE: The prosecution began giving its closing arguments against former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein and seven former members of his regime on Monday in Baghdad, launching the final phase of their 8-month trial for crimes against humanity. Saddam and seven former members of his regime are being tried on charges of crimes against humanity for a crackdown against Shiites in the town of Dujail in the 1980s. "We ask the court to impose the heaviest possible penalty against these defendants," said the lawyer representing the victims of the Dujail crackdown, giving his closing arguments before the prosecution. The defendants carried out a "systematic, wide-scale attack" against Dujail, said the lawyer - whose name has not been released to protect him. He said Saddam ordered the crackdown and followed details of how it was carried out. The crackdown was allegedly in response to an assassination attempt against Saddam which took place in Dujail in 1982, but the lawyer claimed that the shooting attack on Saddam's motorcade that sparked the crackdown was "not real but was fabricated." He added that the crackdown was carried out under the direct supervision of Barzan Ibrahim, co-defendant and Saddam's former intelligence chief, and Ibrahim participated personally in torturing those who were detained. The defence is scheduled to take its turn starting on July 10. After that the five-judge panel is expected to call a recess of the court to consider its verdicts in the trial of The eight could face execution by hanging if convicted on the charges. They are accused of arresting hundreds of people in the crackdown, including women and children, torturing some to death and killing 148 who were sentenced to death for the 1982 assassination attempt against Saddam in Dujail.
