** 60 Second Science ** Visual Fixation & Target Fixation aren't the same ✅ Subscribe to my channel: @survivalskillsuk 🥇 Join the community at www.ko-fi.com/survivalskills I was recently alerted to a video about observation, which said: "we need to be actively scanning for everything without ever fixating on a single thing". By coincidence, I'd just used my 'Skills on Saturday' written posts to discuss human visual perception in some depth, explaining how we build up our mental image of the world around us - what we call situational awareness. Some comments made it pretty clear there was confusion over the term 'fixation'. As far as I can tell, the term fixation came into motorcycling thanks to Keith Code. He realised that in emergencies, riders fail to react according to their training, and blamed what he called 'Survival Reactions'. In particular he realised that when surprised by an unexpected threat - a car suddenly appearing in our path, a bend visibly tightening up - our gaze locks onto the threat. Unable to look away, we lose sight of the bigger picture, which may have shown us a way out of trouble. He called this 'target fixation'. But the term fixation is also used in human visual perception; 'visual fixations' are short pauses of around half a second as our eyes stop moving and focus our central, high resolution, colour 'foveal' vision on a particular item of interest to gain detailed information. Our eyes skip around the scene, from one visual fixation to another, each pause adding more detail. Look at this still from the video - to gain maximum visual data, our 'fixation point' will jump around, each fixation gathering that high resolution detail which creates the overall scene. We use this process on the road. We gather information via a scanning process to identify specific threats then use a visual fixation to focus on fine detail. Spotting a driveway by scanning, a fixation would detect a car backing out of it. Seeing a bend ahead, we'll use a fixation on the Limit Point to judge its sharpness. And sometimes movement in peripheral vision triggers a fixation to see what caught our attention. So there are BAD 'target fixations' and GOOD 'visual fixations'. Learn the difference, learn to avoid the first and learn to exploit the second. ------------------------------- WHAT DO WE NEED TO KNOW AS ADVANCED RIDERS?
