In addition to recreation, the High Line Park in New York City offers its visitors an ambitious public art program. The latest public art project is called "Space Available", conceived by the artist Kim Beck. Kim Beck created three sculptures resembling the skeletal framework behind advertisting billboards. In this video interview, Kim Beck talks about the idea behind her work "Space Available", the challenges of realizing the project, the unique character of the High Line, and future projects. "Space Available" by Kim Beck consists of three sculptures that are installed on roofs of buildings close to the High Line. With this project, the High Line art commissions reach out to the surroundings of the High Line. They are echoing existing billboards and buildings in partial states of construction. Kim Beck grew up in Colorado and currently lives in Pittsburgh. She is an Associate Professor of Art at Carnegie Mellon University. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center, Carnegie Museum of Art, Walker Art Center, Mattress Factory, and Socrates Sculpture Park, among other venues. She is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships including the Publishing Program for Emerging Artists at Printed Matter, and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. Her work is included in such public collections as the Carnegie Museum, Denver Art Museum, and Memphis Brooks Museum.
