The Muslims were few in number and had very limited resources. On the suggestion of Hazrat Salman al-Farsi (RA), the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ordered that a trench be dug around Madinah—something completely new to the Arabs. Scene of Hunger and Hardship During the digging of the trench, the Muslims were suffering from severe hunger. Many companions tied stones to their stomachs. Hazrat Jabir (RA) saw that the Prophet ﷺ had two stones tied to his stomach due to hunger, while the companions had only one. This was a powerful lesson that a true leader bears more hardship than his followers. The Breaking of the Rock While digging, the companions encountered a huge rock that no one could break. They informed the Prophet ﷺ. When the Prophet ﷺ struck the rock with a pickaxe, sparks flew out with every strike, and he said: I have been shown the palaces of Persia and Rome.” At a time when Muslims were surrounded by enemies and suffering from hunger, this statement taught them that ease surely comes after hardship. The End of the Enemy The disbelievers surrounded Madinah for many days but could not cross the trench. Finally, Allah sent a strong wind and fear into their hearts. Their tents were uprooted, fires were extinguished, and they were forced to return in failure.
