Hanifaru Bay is one of the greatest attractions for snorkelers and divers in the world today. No marine life enthusiast would want to miss the opportunity of watching hundreds of manta rays and whale sharks feed in their natural environment. With a fin-span of up to 9m wide, these elegant but harmless plankton feeders are a mezmerising sight for the underwater nature enthusiast. Now a UNESCO marine biosphere protected areas, Hanifaru Bay is a lagoon in Baa Atoll, northern Maldives, that is no larger than the size of a football field, yet it has become renowned as the world’s largest Manta Ray feeding destination. In their annual migration from May to November, Mantas gather here in the hundreds, along with whale sharks and other big pelagics, to engage in a feeding frenzy on the unusually-rich plankton. Diving is prohibited in Hanifaru Bay, but if you have ever wanted to snorkel with mantas, this is just about as good as it gets. Our guests in July 2017 had this relatively private and intimate encounter with the gentle giants of the ocean.
